Luciano Darderi is becoming one of the standout names of the South American clay court tour. The Italo-Argentinian reached the final of the ATP Buenos Aires, where he succumbed to Fran Cerúndolo (6-4, 6-2), but despite the defeat, he exited the tournament as the world number 21, his best position in the ATP ranking.

The accumulated fatigue in the Argentine tournament took its toll on his debut at the ATP Rio, where he fell to the other Cerúndolo brother, in this case Juan Manuel (1-6, 6-3, 4-6), but he is now ready to close out the South American clay court tour in the best possible way at the ATP Santiago de Chile, where he will be the second seed and will face Mariano Navone.

But before stepping onto Chilean clay, Navone spoke in an interview with the Chilean media La Tercera about the two best players in the world: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, as well as the controversy surrounding the possible surface change in the South American tour to stay in the circuit. He also revealed his main goals for 2026.

Luciano Darderi wants to train with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

"Whenever I can, I try to train with Alcaraz and Sinner. I try to train with them because it's very important for growth. They are very humble guys, good people. Alcaraz is a good guy, from a good family," while with Sinner, Musetti, and the other Italians, the relationship is solid. It's a good group of people, very human; I get along very well with them beyond tennis."

Firmly defends that the South American tour remains on clay

"I believe that South America needs tournaments because more than 10% in the ranking are South Americans. I don't understand why we don't deserve these tournaments. For example, this tournament has a lot of prestige, Buenos Aires and Rio, too. Many players have come through. With this Masters 1000 in Arabia, the tour would break a bit, and it's not one person's decision, but the ATP's and those who organize that. I'm just a player trying to give my opinion."

"If you ask me, I would leave it on clay. I like playing there; South American players earn their points on clay, and they also deserve a clay court tour."

Sinner or Alcaraz?

I don't know, both play a lot. Jannik is two years older than Carlos. They are improving, going up, down in tennis, there are injuries, tough moments. They play well on different surfaces. Sinner plays a bit better than Carlos indoors; he won the ATP Finals two or three years. Carlos is more unpredictable, a bit more random, has more variety. Sinner is more solid; he plays more tactical, although now he's changing a lot, using more drop shots, coming to the net more, and trying to incorporate more information into his game, and I think that's also making him improve a lot."

Reveals who his idols are

I liked how Del Potro hit with his forehand, and then when I grew up, I started to like Federer; how he played, his style... Those were the first two idols I had. Obviously, Djokovic is the best in history in terms of titles. That's no small feat, and he's also an idol because at 38 years old, he's still at that level. The other day, I was watching the final with Alcaraz, and it was incredible to see him fighting there. I have to take that as an example.

He is very clear about his goals but does not want to rush

"A year ago, the goal was the top 50, now it's the top 20. Then I'll try to get into the top 10, always aiming as high as possible. There's no rush or illusions; I have a lot of room for improvement ahead."

"I'm still very young; I turned 24 a week ago, so I think I still have a lot to improve physically and mentally, in my tennis, my consistency. There's still a lot to improve, and we are doing a good job with my team, my father, who has supported me in the good and the bad times. Additionally, we have now brought in Guillermo Pérez Roldán, a great guy. But the main goal is to play a full season without injuries," assures a Luciano Darderi who is at the peak of his career and enjoying a South American clay court season that is in jeopardy.
