Jelena Ostapenko has once again written a very special page in tennis history. The Latvian conquered the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon this Thursday alongside Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo after defeating the Australian pair composed of Marc Polmans and Storm Hunter in the final with a score of 4-6, 7-5, and 6-2. A triumph that goes far beyond a new Grand Slam, as it allows her to access one of the most exclusive clubs in tennis.

With this title, Ostapenko becomes the fourth active tennis player capable of completing the so-called Grand Slam Triple Crown, meaning conquering at least one major in all three categories: singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Until now, this feat had only been achieved by Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Barbora Krejcikova. Starting from this Thursday, the champion of the 2017 Roland Garros is also part of that privileged group.

Ostapenko, from her breakthrough in Paris to a doubles specialist

Ostapenko's career has always been marked by enormous talent. From a very young age, she burst onto the WTA circuit as one of the great promises of world tennis, and expectations regarding her were immense. Her definitive breakthrough came at Roland Garros 2017, when, at just 20 years old, she carried out one of the most unexpected feats of the last decade by winning the title after defeating Simona Halep in the final with a score of 4-6, 6-4, and 6-3.

That win turned her into an overnight star, but it also brought immense pressure. Her impulsive nature and aggressive style of play, based on taking constant risks, led her to alternate between significant victories and unexpected losses in the following years.

However, over time, Ostapenko has found a new dimension in the doubles circuit. While never abandoning her dangerous singles game, the Latvian has been consolidating her position as one of the most competitive players in this category, where her power from the baseline perfectly complements her partners' net specialty.

The second significant step came in 2024 when she won the US Open in women's doubles alongside Ukrainian Lyudmyla Kichenok. Now, two years later, she has completed the circle by lifting the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon alongside Marcelo Arévalo.

Following the victory, the Latvian did not hide her satisfaction at achieving what she considers a very special accomplishment. "It's been an incredible week. I'm now a Grand Slam champion in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. I think it's fantastic to win in all categories. We've played really well with Marcelo. I enjoy playing with him a lot, and we had a great time on the court."

She also acknowledged the added value of achieving this precisely at the All England Club. "Of course, winning Wimbledon is something very special. I think it's one of the greatest tournaments out there. I already won here as a junior, and now I've secured the mixed doubles title."

Ostapenko's third final at Wimbledon

The triumph also had a significant emotional component. Ostapenko had lost her two previous finals at Wimbledon, one in women's doubles and the other precisely in mixed doubles, so this victory represented a small personal revenge. "The third final was the charm. Last year was tough losing the doubles final, and previously, I had also lost a mixed doubles final here. This time was the moment to clinch the title."

The Latvian also explained why the partnership with Marcelo Arévalo had worked so well throughout the week. "I think our styles fit perfectly. I play from the baseline, he is extraordinary at the net, and he has served incredibly well throughout the tournament. When he serves, I have a lot of confidence."

At almost 30 years old, Ostapenko seems to have found the perfect balance between the explosiveness that led her to win Roland Garros as a twenty-something and the competitive maturity required in high-level doubles. Her talent was always beyond doubt. Now, her trophy cabinet places her alongside some of the greatest legends of women's tennis, making her just the fourth active player capable of winning a Grand Slam in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.
