Andy Roddick has surprised the tennis world by revealing a surreal anecdote about David Ferrer when they were both still playing on the circuit. After Coco Gauff stated at Wimbledon 2026 that she never got tired after a tennis match, the former world number 1 disclosed that the player who amazed him the most was David Ferrer, as he had incredible cardio despite smoking tobacco.

In his podcast 'Served,' Roddick shared this funny anecdote about 'Ferru', which he has described as the most psychotic thing he has ever seen in his life. "I once saw David Ferrer play a three-set match at Indian Wells and then I saw him running as I was driving home, and later that evening I went to have dinner at a hotel and walked past the bar and saw him smoking a cigarette in the bar. He didn't get tired and was smoking cigarettes," he confessed.

Anecdote that surprises due to the protagonist

Ferrer reached number 3 in the ATP rankings, and he even had a positive head-to-head against Roddick. Moreover, the former Spanish tennis player and current captain of Spain in the Davis Cup was one of the most combative and quickest players to have graced the circuit. He fought for every point until the end, making this anecdote about the American surprising, considering that smoking cigarettes didn't affect him when performing on the court.

It is not clear if it was an isolated anecdote, or if Ferrer was a regular smoker, but it seems that this image has stayed with Roddick to this day, as he still recalls it as the most surreal thing he has seen related to tennis. It is not very common for a tennis player to smoke, or at least publicly, and no one expected to see David as the central figure in such a crazy story.
