Karolina Muchova is one of the players who has best managed to maintain a varied tennis in a circuit increasingly dominated by power from the baseline. The slice on the backhand side remains one of her great hallmarks, although the Czech acknowledges that current conditions, even on grass, have significantly reduced the effectiveness of a shot that a few years ago made much more difference.

Asked about who she considers to have the best slice in the women's circuit, Muchova refused to place herself among the specialists and preferred to highlight one of her most creative rivals. "I don't even know if I would put myself among the best (laughs). I think Ons Jabeur has always had a great slice. I also see the other players training and feel that they are all working on that shot and the game towards the net. I think everyone is improving in that aspect. It's hard to name just one person, but there are many who do it very well," she commented amidst laughter.

The Czech number one also reflected on an aspect that is generating more and more debate: the limited presence of the slice in the current women's circuit, even at Wimbledon, a tournament historically associated with this type of technical resources. For Muchova, the explanation is not only in the evolution of the game but also in the change of the playing surfaces themselves.

A different grass, a different game

"Now I feel that the grass is a bit slower than it was years ago and the slice is no longer so effective," explained the Roland Garros semifinalist, convinced that current conditions favor this type of defensive or transitional shots less. However, she made it clear that she will continue to use it whenever she deems it useful within her game plan.

"I like to use it to set up the point, build the exchange, and ultimately win the point. That's why I play it," concluded Muchova, who after three good victories at the All England Club will face her compatriot Barbora Krejcikova in the round of 16.
