Aryna Sabalenka is one of the top favorites to win Wimbledon 2026, where she reached the semifinals last year. However, the world number 1 is going through a crisis of results and mental struggles that worry Rick Macci, former coach of Serena Williams, leading him to believe that she may not be able to lift the trophy at the All England Club.

Macci has observed certain patterns in Sabalenka's attitude that suggest her psychological issues have not disappeared. Sabalenka herself mentioned a few weeks ago that she had to see a psychiatrist after her defeat at Roland Garros against Diana Shnaider, and this year the Grand Slams continue to be her unfinished business. These 'red flags' are what Macci emphasized in an interview with 'Tennis365'.

"Look at what's happening with Sabalenka: in her last two defeats, she lost 6-0 in the third set... What is that? It's a warning sign. She was exceptional in tie-breaks; her record in tie-breaks was incredible. But it seems that, on the biggest stage, some things are starting to bother her. And there's a thin line between winning and losing, especially on the women's tour. Let's hope she manages to find the solution," he concluded.

Macci reveals Sabalenka's mental issue

In fact, the former coach of Serena Williams believes that Sabalenka's problem is not in her game, but in everything that happens before she steps on the court. "For me, it's a bit worrying not to have enough pride to even win a match against two players who, on paper, you are clearly better than. I don't know what's going on with Sabalenka off the court, but if you're not there on every point... the margins are so narrow, so narrow, and anyone can beat anyone at any time and any place," he continued.

Macci's concerns are such that initially, he was backing Sabalenka to win the tournament, but he changed his mind after witnessing recent events. "A few weeks ago, I was going to go with Sabalenka (laughter), until I saw what was happening. Now I'm going to vote for Elena Rybakina," he stated. However, he will need to reconsider as Rybakina has just been surprisingly eliminated by Elise Mertens in the third round.

With the exit of the Kazakh player, surely Sabalenka has relieved herself of some pressure, as she has secured leaving Wimbledon as number 1, but her task of winning a Grand Slam this season remains. Only this one and the US Open are left, and time is ticking for a player whose biggest rival remains herself and the inner demons that prevent her from displaying the game she would like.
