Jannik Sinner seeks to defend the title at this Open d'Australie 2026. The Italian player, ranked number two in the world, passed his debut in Melbourne showing a great level against a Hugo Gaston who retired immediately after losing the second set of the match.
Minutes later, Sinner attended a press conference to talk about his feelings in the debut at the Open d'Australie 2026, and he also elaborated on the changes made in his serve and their purpose.
"I have dedicated many long days during the preseason to try to improve as a tennis player, but in the end, the most important thing is to go out on the court and enjoy. It is very special to start the season in a night match here, at a Grand Slam, with the stadium full, trying to give one's best. I tried to understand a bit of his tennis, we played a couple of years ago, and things have changed a bit," confessed Jannik Sinner at a press conference after overcoming the first round of the Open d'Australie 2026.
Jannik Sinner talks about his serve changes
"I felt that the serve was, and still is, a shot that I need to improve. It is the only shot we have where we can do everything ourselves. There is a lot of room for improvement. We changed the serve movement a bit, the pace of the serve. It used to be a bit fast at the beginning, now it's a bit slower. And the serve used to be a bit forward, a bit to the right. Now it's a bit behind and above the head.
It's not a shot I feel very confident with, but at the same time, we are working on it. It is one of the most important shots we have, if not the most important, because it can bring many good things."
Regarding his exhibition in Korea with Carlos Alcaraz
"It was great. The most important thing was connecting with the people, playing again in front of such a large audience was very, very nice. I felt the level of tennis was a bit different because the surface was not easy to play on, but still, the level was good. I also knew it would not affect the start here because the conditions and everything are very, very different. It was a couple of really nice days. Then we came here, and priorities changed."
Conditions of the Open d'Australie 2026
"It is the first major tournament of the season and there is a bit more tension. In the previous days, it wasn't as hot, today it is hotter, and it is important to drink the right amount of water. Today we saw it with Hugo, but I believe he had other problems. Lorenzo's opponent had cramps, Aliassime as well. It is important to take care of all elements to reduce the risk of having cramps."
