Juan Carlos Ferrero and Samu López have been key in the successful season of Carlos Alcaraz. The duo, formed with López's arrival at the beginning of the season, has been a perfect blend of Ferrero's experience, with over seven years of relationship with the Murcian player, and the freshness brought by the former coach of Pablo Carreño.
The partnership between Juan Carlos Ferrero and Samu López has worked out quite well in 2025 because both have been awarded by the ATP as the best coaches of the year in a vote conducted by the other coaches on the circuit. After Carlos Alcaraz's season, it's no surprise: eight titles, including Roland Garros and US Open, 71 victories, and regaining the number one spot in the ATP rankings. A year, undoubtedly, to remember.
On the occasion of this award, Alcaraz's two coaches gave an interview with the ATP, discussing the impact of Samu López joining the team and the crucial moment that changed the number one's season, while revealing their main long-term goal for 2026.
A Duo with Many Years of Experience Together
Ferrero: "It's a great joy. I had no doubts that Samuel would fit very well into the work philosophy because we've been together for many years, and he knows perfectly what I want for Carlos. From the start, he has done a great job."

López: "It's been all smooth because the results have accompanied us. I've known Juan Carlos since he was ten, and Carlos since the beginning of his journey in the Academy (Ferrero Tennis Academy). I had been with Pablo Carreño throughout that period, but we had shared many moments. The working environment has been very easy because we've known each other forever and understood what Carlos needed."
The Second Coach of the Year Title in Ferrero’s Career
Ferrero: "Honestly, since I joined this project, being recognized as the Coach of the year has never been an objective. However, having this work acknowledged by the other coaches who understand how challenging it is means a lot to me to have achieved it twice now. This year brings double joy as I share it with Samuel."
An Effective Duo
López: "Perhaps I have brought freshness because Juan Carlos has been with him for seven years, and I am new, familiar with the team, and each of us has contributed the same but in different ways. Above all, we have emphasized the joy in our work."
Ferrero: "The goal is for Carlos to give his 100% and bring out the talent he has within. We do it with work and discipline, yet also with joy and happiness. In that aspect, I may be a bit more strict and serious, while Samuel is more open and humorous, yet with the necessary seriousness for work."
The Miami defeat and the Monte Carlo title, pivotal in the season's evolution
Ferrero: "Carlos had come from winning in Rotterdam, where he had done very well, but in Indian Wells and Miami, he lost a bit of confidence. It was a challenging moment, not because of the defeat but how it happened. He was affected by the tournament and upon his return, we had a talk. We often converse with him, but when you see him more irritable or vulnerable at a specific moment of the season, we talk more from the psychological and friendship aspect rather than as a coach."
"Winning in Monte Carlo, not playing very well, but showing a tenacious attitude, helped him tremendously to approach the rest of the season with more clarity. From then on, he reached many finals, achieved incredible results like in the Grand Slams. Monte Carlo was a beacon that opened the doors to gaining the confidence he needed, leading to impressive results thereafter."
Juan Carlos Ferrero and Samu López reveal Carlos Alcaraz's goal for 2026
López: "Our mission is to keep his ambition alive. Knowing Carlos, it won't wane, but obviously, we must not settle for what he has achieved."
Ferrero: "From now on, that motivation needs to grow, striving to achieve great things that few can. Stay highly motivated, never settle, always aim for more with that joy that characterizes him, spreading to all of us."
A More Mature and Communicative Alcaraz
López: "Carlos has matured and recognized the importance of expressing his feelings and how he feels. Since Monte Carlo, he has been communicating much more about his emotions, which has helped him express himself better, in difficulties, fears, and everything that comes with the pressure of the circuit," says Samu López, who alongside Juan Carlos Ferrero has laid the foundation for a season that Carlos Alcaraz will never forget. But their sights are already set on a very ambitious 2026.
