The signing of Craig Tiley by the USTA has stirred up a lot of controversy, closing a two-decade chapter with Tennis Australia to now go represent another Grand Slam. What are his intentions in the United States?

The million-dollar question is how Craig Tiley will leverage all the experience gained at Tennis Australia to now apply it in his role as CEO at the USTA. This is what the businessman discussed with colleagues from Tennis Channel, outlining the main missions ahead and what he aims to achieve to further distance American tennis from its competitors. We listen to him and then evaluate his words in the comments section.

Craig Tiley shares how his USTA signing came about

“It has been a long process. It all started last year after some changes; we had a couple of months of extensive back and forth discussions. We decided to put it on hold in January because the focus had to be on the players and the Australian Open; I didn't want my attention to be diverted. Finally, we finalized everything after the tournament and made the announcement shortly after. I am very excited to start mid-year since I still have to finalize a few things with Tennis Australia. They have been fantastic with me throughout the whole process, so I am excited to return to the United States. I spent 18 years there before going to Australia 20 years ago; I feel like I have hopped across all continents, no complaints from me.”

Seeking ways to improve tennis in the United States

“When you are the CEO of a large organization, there are always three pillars under your responsibility: getting more people to play this sport, ensuring that players perform at their highest level, and providing the platforms for all of this to happen, the example here being the US Open and each event on the professional circuit. At the end of the day, you oversee everything, hire great talents, and consolidate your ideas with expectations. My mind works in a very simple way, so I need clarity. At the end of the day, it is not about what we want to do but rather what customers and players truly desire.”

This will be Craig Tiley's goal upon his arrival at the USTA

“We want to ensure we remain a player-friendly organization. On the participation side, there are now over 27 million people regularly playing tennis in the United States, which is splendid. It is an ambitious goal, but the aim is to reach 35 million by 2035; we have a path to achieve it if we all work together, putting politics aside and focusing on getting people to pick up a racket and play. From a player's perspective, I want every professional to be proud of the organization that provides them with platforms and services. We are going to become a customer and player-focused organization.”

How can the US Open be improved?

“The fan experience boils down to doing it all the time. I always talk about the four keys: more screens, more shade, more seating, and more space. If you cover these four things, fans will be very happy, so we will continue to focus on that, even though the US Open already does many things excellently. We need to continue self-assessment, understand exactly what fans want, as everything will be centered around them and the players.”
