Wimbledon 2026 is just around the corner, and many names are already positioning themselves in the race for the title. Jannik Sinner will start as the top favorite, eager to avenge what happened at Roland Garros; Novak Djokovic will continue the hunt for the 25th Grand Slam in one of his sacred territories; Alexander Zverev will want to push his limits with the confidence that winning in Paris gives him... but as important as the candidates are the absences, and the list for the third Grand Slam of the year is extensive and painful.

The big name we will all miss undoubtedly will be Carlos Alcaraz. The Murcian's recovery is progressing rapidly, with intense physical training sessions, left-handed hitting, bandages that are gradually decreasing, and hope that his wrist responds well in his return to training. All of this, of course, meant missing Wimbledon, an absence confirmed well in advance, denying us the opportunity to get excited about a comeback in the place where he has already triumphed twice.

The incredible absences from Wimbledon 2026: a semifinalist, dangerous youngsters, stars...

Also not arriving in time in London was Holger Rune, who had set grass court events as a potential destination for his return to competition. Healing an Achilles heel is no trivial matter, and the Dane has been realizing this over the weeks, extending his recovery timelines and withdrawing from tournaments he had initially signed up for. Even his presence at the US Open is not guaranteed: no matter how good the feelings are, risking it all on such an injury-prone surface did not make sense.

A similar situation for Lorenzo Musetti, although his problems stem somewhat more recently. The Italian has not had a break since the Australian Open, and his latest injury, the same one that knocked him out of Roland Garros, will not give him enough leeway to participate in London. Thigh, arm... the Italian has faced multiple issues and will at least aim to compete at the US Open to avoid missing out on three of the four Grand Slams of the year.

There is also room on the injured list for luxury substitutes, players capable of surprising the world on a great day and who occupy the top ranks of the ATP circuit. Valentin Vacherot is currently experiencing the bitter side of tennis; after his sensational triumph in Shanghai, the Monegasque has been dealing with a foot injury for months that forced him to withdraw from his second-round match at Roland Garros. Another player with a fragile body is Tomas Machac, who will miss the London tournament due to a left foot injury, while Sebastian Korda has also not recovered from his injury at the Miami Open: from defeating Alcaraz to not even being able to step foot on a tennis court, destiny was capricious with him.

Absences in the WTA: two young players in need of rest

The women's circuit does not have such a detailed list of absences in its elite as the men's, but it is witnessing two hard absences, especially considering the potential they had in a tournament like this. Hailey Baptiste was the most heartbreaking news from Paris: her anterior cruciate ligament rupture during a match shattered her aspirations of greatness in this 2026. After her great performance in Madrid and knowing her ability to change the pace, vary the game, and make drop shots, she would have become a significant threat for Wimbledon which will not materialize.

Nor will a player who made headlines in recent days. A dance partner of Serena Williams in her return to competition, the Queen's Club tournament, however, will hold negative memories for Victoria Mboko: an untimely slip in singles led to her withdrawal from the tournament... and also from Wimbledon, where problems in her left knee will prevent her from competing at the Tennis Cathedral. Alongside her, familiar faces from the circuit like Sonay Kartal or Victoria Kudermetova will also not be part of a dance that already has too many absences.
