Holger Rune is in the final stages of his recovery. After rupturing his Achilles tendon last October, the Dane announced his return to the ATP of Hamburg, a week before the start of Roland Garros, although the physical and tennis form in which he will return to the circuit is still a mystery.
But before hitting a tennis court again, Rune granted an in-depth interview to The Free Press Journal, in which he talked about how tough it was to come to terms with the serious injury, his tennis goals, and his admiration for Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. He emphasized the importance of his family in reaching the elite and shared his thoughts on being labeled a bad boy.

Holger Rune praises Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer
"I initially supported Nadal, then Federer, and later Djokovic. These three players remain a great source of inspiration for me. I often watch their matches and am still impressed. They are so different from each other. There is so much to learn from each of them."
He aims to make history in Danish tennis and sports
"In Denmark, I aimed to revive men's tennis, which was fading compared to football and handball. I believe I have already succeeded in increasing interest in this sport. Now more kids play, which is fantastic. We have the best fans in Denmark, so I am glad that they are now also watching tennis. Looking ahead, I hope to offer people a great experience when I play. It's not easy to explain, but the ideal scenario would be for all spectators to feel the same emotions as I do, as if we were experiencing this adventure together."
"It's like bringing real human joy to a world that is becoming increasingly robotic. Much of tennis is already based on tactics and data-driven developments. The only original part is personality, what we bring to the court, and the amount of emotion we share with those watching us. So, besides being remembered as the first Dane to win all the Grand Slams, that is on my wish list. I don't think we unite people by putting cameras in bathrooms but by giving more of ourselves as players when we are on the court."
He wants to shed that bad boy image
"I am often surprised that people are surprised by how relaxed I am. It's as if they think I'm always at my peak performance. I usually give my all when I play a match or train. Off the court, however, I am very calm and sensible. I am Danish. We don't go around making a fuss. We keep our feet on the ground."
He remembers that tough October 18, 2025
"You can't imagine what it feels like to suddenly not be able to walk. In December, I couldn't walk. I couldn't put weight on the leg at all. The physical part is one thing, but seeing your whole life fade away suddenly is another, and I love my life. It's not something you would wish on your worst enemy. Injuries at this level are terrible. There isn't much to say. I am sure I learned a lot and felt how much I missed tennis," said Holger Rune, who concluded by sending his love for the sport.
"It's very simple: I love tennis. I love hitting the ball. I love competing. I love everything about tennis."
