Iva Jovic is one of the big sensations on the WTA circuit. The American tennis player with Serbian roots has improved by leaps and bounds in 2026, something in which Novak Djokovic (her idol) has had a part to play. In a recent appearance on the 'Served' podcast, Jovic explained the advice that the Serbian tennis player gives her, and how this has helped her to improve faster.

It's not the first time Djokovic has helped emerging tennis players. The very own Carlos Alcaraz has revealed on more than one occasion that the Serbian has given him his opinion on certain matters, and Jovic's case is no different. The 18-year-old tennis player is the daughter of Serbian immigrants, so Novak has been her role model since she was young. That is something the former world number one knows, so he has fully involved himself in ensuring Iva continues to achieve good results.

"He has watched my matches, given me lots of advice on how I can become a better player, things I need to adjust... so I hope to add that versatility to my game that Novak demonstrated throughout his career. He sends me text messages after matches, with analysis, or sometimes the WTA or a tournament records a point I played well, and he says, 'I love what you did in this point, you should try to do it more often'," she revealed.

Djokovic's study on Jovic's game to help her improve

As Jovic herself says, "It's not the typical 'you can do it,' it's incredibly specific and detailed, to the point that it's obvious he has watched many of my matches. I don't know where he finds the time, but he makes an effort to help young players." It's admirable that someone who has already won everything and has nothing to prove decides to invest his time in these things, especially considering the lifestyle he leads. One more proof of why Novak is so special.

What surprised Jovic the most at the time, although it may seem unbelievable, is seeing that Djokovic is as normal or even more so than the rest, something hard to believe for a person who holds him in such high regard. "He is the number one. He is my number one idol. There is no one above Novak. It's very strange, having idolized someone for so long and then talking to that person and realizing, 'My God, he is literally a normal human being who has the same problems as any of us'".

"You talk to him for two seconds and you realize the amount of work he has put in, not only physically, but also mentally. He has an imposing presence. The way he talks about tennis, his knowledge of the sport is incredibly high," she concluded. Everything has a reason, and Jovic has discovered one of the reasons why Novak Djokovic is the GOAT of this sport.
