Rublev explains the reason why he did not participate in the Olympic Games

It was one of the stars who decided not to be in Paris... even though he could have played as a neutral athlete. Why didn't he do it?

Andrey Rublev is in need of big victories. The Russian tennis player has experienced a slight dip in the middle part of the season, with very surprising defeats far from his profile as an ultraconsistent player. Rublev decided to set aside the Paris Olympics to focus on the North American hardcourt swing, in search of the points he left behind. After debuting with a win at the ATP Montreal 2024, where he dispatched Tomas Etcheverry in two sets, he explains on Tennis Channel microphones the reasons behind this decision and his schedule.

- Good feelings in his victory over Etcheverry, despite starting a break down

"In the first set, I didn't know what to expect from the conditions. Training is one thing, but matches are very different. Tomas started at a high level, feeling great, and immediately broke my serve. When you see a guy hitting serves at 210 km/h, giving it 100%, you're a break down... you start to stress out (laughter). But I was able to calm down, leave the stress behind, and simply started to compete, to fight. I managed to break him, and as soon as I won the first set, I felt relieved, and from there, I played much better."

- You had never won in Montreal before: was that something you had in mind before the match?

"No, I didn't think about it at all. Rather, there was a moment in my head, when I was losing, where I thought: 'I chose to come here with more preparation time because there are players coming from the Olympics and... it won't change anything, they come from there and win, and I will lose anyway, I should have gone to the Olympics'. That's what I thought for a moment (laughter)."

- Are you happy, then, with your preparation for this swing and not going to the Olympics?

"Yes, in the end, I am. I didn't compete in the Olympics because we felt that I wasn't mentally ready for it. My recent results and the way I was behaving... we decided that we had to prioritize my career, taking some time off to recover mentally, play some ATP 250 tournaments, and arrive in America earlier to be fully ready for Montreal."

- How would you describe your season so far?

"If Madrid didn't exist, I would be outside the top 15, that's how I would describe it (laughter). Yes, Madrid is there, but in everything else, I practically lost in the first round. The good news is that there's still the second half of the year (smiles)."

- Things you want to improve for upcoming matches

"I need to play with more freedom. That's what I want to improve. Today I played with freedom in the second set and was much more dangerous. Mentally, I must remain calm even when I'm losing."
