Camila Giorgi will return to professional tennis after becoming a mother. The 34-year-old Italian is pregnant, training in Mallorca, and has already begun planning her return to the WTA circuit.
She does not want to rush, has not set a specific date yet, and does not intend to repeat past formulas. If anything has changed in the life of the former world number 26, it is precisely that: this time, everything will be different. Giorgi expects to give birth in early September and, in the meantime, she maintains a work routine that speaks volumes about her intentions.
“I have been training seriously for a few months. I also have a trainer and a team with me,” explains the Italian on Eurosport. The priority, obviously, is the baby and its well-being, which is why she has the support of several doctors. But tennis is already regaining a significant place in her life.
“There is a well-structured plan for the comeback. I don't like to act on instinct off the court. I want everything to be done logically and with a precise program,” she affirms. Her plan now involves temporarily ceasing preparations after childbirth, completing her recovery, and gradually returning to competition.
Giorgi's confidence in her physical condition is absolute. “I don’t think I'll have any problems getting back in shape, considering that I am training about three hours a day,” she states. A declaration that clearly indicates her return is not a passing whim or a mere possibility thrown into the air. The Italian is preparing to comeback.
A new Camila Giorgi after several years away from the circuit
The most significant change, however, is not only in her personal life. It also directly affects her working team. Throughout almost her entire career, her father, Sergio Giorgi, was a central figure in her professional journey. Now, the former Italian tennis player announces that this relationship will change drastically.
“My father will only play the role of a grandfather, that’s it. When the time comes, I will announce my team, but it will be a completely different situation from the past. It’s a different comeback, with a completely new perspective,” evaluates the former World No.26.
Her husband, Andreas Ignacio Pasutti, an Argentine coach and former coach of several players, will be one of the key figures in this new stage. The couple got married in Buenos Aires on February 26, and according to Giorgi herself, he is currently the one who is closest to her, especially during her pregnancy. “Then we will schedule dates, travels, and tournaments. One step at a time,” she explains.
And that seems to be the major change in the new Camila Giorgi. The player who for years lived tennis with fierce intensity, under a highly structured family setup, and with a playing style as explosive as it was unpredictable, now talks about planning, patience, and perspective.
When will Camila Giorgi return to the circuit?
Giorgi has an approximate idea of the path, but she does not want to reveal all the details yet. Her desire is to return at an Italian tournament and start with smaller competitions before entering the main circuit. “The idea will be to play many small tournaments first and, when I am 100% ready, to return to the circuit. I already have my plan quite clear, but I don’t want to reveal too much,” she acknowledges.
The Italian insists that her retirement was never a definitive farewell. “I'm just quite reserved and reveal little about my life. I took a break from this sport because I wanted to do other things in life,” she explains. Now those other things have changed her perspective. Giorgi will be a mother and will return to compete with a different team, a different mindset, and a renewed motivation. Perhaps that's why her return is not simply an attempt to recover the player she was. The real challenge may be to discover who the new Camila Giorgi is when she picks up a racket again.
