Yulia Putintseva is back in the spotlight. The Kazakh player secured the victory in her third-round match at the 2026 Australian Open after defeating Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3, advancing for the first time to the round of 16 at the first major of the season.

The issue arose when Yulia Putintseva, instead of celebrating her achievement, chose to confront the Turkish public that had been cheering incessantly for Zeynep Sonmez throughout the match. Initially, the Kazakh player cupped her hand to her ear, then blew kisses, and finally, she started dancing in front of a large group of Turks.

The press conference following her victory focused on the controversial ending and her celebration. Putintseva expressed her displeasure with the Turkish fans' loud shouts during points, labeling them as "disrespectful."

Yulia Putintseva explains the reason for her controversial celebration after defeating Zeynep Sonmez at the 2026 Australian Open

"There's always someone rooting for one player or the other, and that's part of the beauty of sports. However, today there were truly disrespectful moments, like when they shouted between my first and second serves, not in a normal way, but very loudly, clearly hoping for me to fail."

"At 4-3 in a crucial game, I set up a point nicely, hit a forehand, and someone started coughing right at the moment of impact. That's when I thought, 'Okay, today I won't lose.' I was ready to fight until the end. There are people with tennis etiquette and, unfortunately, those who lack it. Eventually, exhausted and with people whistling, all I could do was dance for them and carry on."

She claims her reaction would have been worse a year ago

"Not all the time, but in key moments, when it was evident they were crucial. They yelled during my shots consistently. When she made a good shot and I was still in the point, they celebrated as if it was already over. Even on let balls, they shouted just as the ball was coming toward me. It's very distracting, especially in this heat."

"However, I'm pleased I kept my composure because the Yulia from last year probably would have thrown something into the stands at some point."

She explains the key to her victory

"I think it was about staying focused and controlling emotions, considering so much was happening. It's challenging in itself because she's playing an incredible tournament and a match at a tremendously high level. The conditions were tough: intense heat and quite windy from one side. In such a scenario, you have to keep a cool head, and that's very difficult," Yulia Putintseva stated, never one to shy away from controversy but now in the round of 16 of the 2026 Australian Open, awaiting the winner between Iva Jovic and Jasmine Paolini.
