Holger Rune will return to competition next week. This has been confirmed by the Danish player on his social media, as he will be part of the Danish team facing Bulgaria in the Davis Cup on September 18 and 19, marking the end of nearly eleven months away from official competition. The return will take place at home, at the Royal Stage in Hillerød.

Rune's last appearance dates back to October 18, 2025, when he had to retire against Ugo Humbert during the semifinals of the ATP in Stockholm. An MRI subsequently confirmed a rupture of the left Achilles tendon, one of the most serious injuries for any athlete, which forced the former world number four to undergo surgery and endure a long and tedious recovery.

Since then, the 2026 calendar has been a series of absences and postponed returns. Rune started the year by missing Brisbane, the Australian Open, Rotterdam, Buenos Aires, and Acapulco, before also pulling out of Indian Wells, where he was defending the 650 points from the final achieved in 2025. He was also unavailable for Miami.

The first date marked in red for his return was the clay tour. He even considered making a comeback in Hamburg, but in May he announced his withdrawal from both the German ATP 500 and Roland Garros, delaying his plans once again.

The next target was Wimbledon, but he also didn’t arrive in time. In August, he resumed high-intensity training —even sharing the court with Carlos Alcaraz— and it seemed possible to see him at the US Open. Ultimately, he ruled out New York because he didn't want a Grand Slam of five sets to be his first tournament after such an injury, although during training in Murcia, we saw that he could not keep up with Carlitos in the long sessions they had.

Now, after months of rehabilitation and several frustrating attempts, Rune has a date for his return. Denmark-Bulgaria will be his starting point, in front of his home crowd in the best possible comeback for him.
