Matteo Berrettini faces the final weeks of recovery with optimism. The Italian, who was forced to withdraw from Roland Garros due to injury in the quarterfinals, is confident he will be ready in time for Wimbledon, the most special tournament of his career. In an interview with GQ Italia during the ATP Stuttgart, the Roman reviewed his physical condition, his historic relationship with grass, and Flavio Cobolli's exciting journey to the Roland Garros final.

At 30 years old, Berrettini remains one of the most dangerous players on grass. Indeed, he was the first Italian in history to reach a Wimbledon final back in 2021 and boasts four titles on this surface between Queen's and Stuttgart. His powerful serve, the aggressiveness of his forehand, and his tricky slice backhand make him a particularly tough opponent when the tour lands on the green courts.

Wimbledon, Berrettini's main goal

Berrettini admitted that not being able to compete in Stuttgart was particularly painful due to everything this tournament means to him. "It hurts not having been able to play here. I've suffered quite a bit, but I'm happy with the work I've done in recent weeks, and I'll be ready for Wimbledon." After several years marked by physical problems, Berrettini is once again facing a grass court swing where historically he has shown his best form.

"I arrive with the feeling of a person very proud of the path I have traveled but still hungry to achieve certain results, as seen in Paris. At the same time, I must take the right steps to arrive in shape, but I know that when I adjust two or three things, it is a tournament where I can do well and enjoy it." Despite the remaining physical doubts, Berrettini maintains the excitement of returning to compete at the highest level in London.

Although he is now considered one of the great specialists on the tour, he did not always have such a close relationship with grass. "Do you know when I understood that I could become a good grass court player? Right here. Because in 2018, I didn't like playing on grass much. In 2019, we first played the Davis Cup in India, on a quite tricky court. Then I came here and won the tournament without dropping a set. That's when I understood that I loved playing on grass," commented the Italian.

Berrettini moved watching Cobolli's Roland Garros final

One of the most emotional moments of the interview came when he talked about Flavio Cobolli. Berrettini followed from afar his compatriot's incredible journey to the Roland Garros final and did not hide the pride he felt seeing him fight for a Grand Slam. "With Flavio, there is such a special story that it is difficult to find the words. Seeing him in a final moved me. I know the weight of stepping onto such an important stage. I am proud of him and the relationship we have."

Their friendship has strengthened over the years to become one of the most special in Italian tennis. So much so that actor Alessandro Borghi joked about the possibility of bringing their story to the big screen. "I saw the video; we should make a movie about it. There is an incredible story behind it. Winning the Davis Cup together was something beautiful," he explained.
