Since Mark Edmondson lifted the title in the 1976 season, no man has managed to conquer the Australian Open again. Four brave souls came close, but none crossed that line. Next year will mark 50 years of drought in Melbourne, a fact that Alex De Miñaur dreams of ending. The biggest contender in this edition to bring joy to the local audience is in his hands, but he is the first to prefer setting aside these stories and focusing on the daily work. He appeared remarkably calm at the Media Day held this Friday, displaying a special maturity to be ready to fight for it all.

Season kick-off

"It's incredible to be back home. As Australian tennis players, we spend most of the year abroad, so for us, it means the world to have the opportunity to start the year here in summer. In my case, every time I step out on the court, I know the crowd is excited to watch tennis, ready to kick off the season. As Australian players, we want to do everything we can to bring out our best tennis now."

More pressure than usual

"It's no secret that, being the home Grand Slam, there are always some extra eyes, more commitments that you have to fulfill as a player. The key is to find the healthiest balance and do what you have to do, but also ensure that you are covering the work you need to do on the court, off the court, and at the same time, make sure you arrive prepared for the first round. Right now, I feel good, I'm at 100%, and I imagine that as the match day approaches, the stress will increase."

The best Australian in the world

"I haven't been in this position for long, maybe a couple of years, so it brings a bit more exposure and some exaggeration behind me… but it really hasn't changed anything about what I continue to do as a player. My job is to walk onto the court and do everything I can to win tennis matches, that's the most important thing. I still maintain the same preparation, nothing has changed. There will always be outside noise, but I'm fortunate to have a great team around me that allows us to focus within our little bubble. We have like a tunnel vision when we enter these types of tournaments. I'm going to do everything I can to play many matches here, I want Australia to feel proud."

Establishing his own foundation to assist children

"This is one of the most exciting things I've done in my career, but it's a process that takes time. It was about finding a way to help the next generation, figuring out exactly how to set this up to assist young children transitioning into becoming tennis players. I was fortunate to learn a lot from so many incredible past players, especially through Davis Cup and numerous tournament experiences. Beyond providing financial support to these children, the most important thing is the mentoring and advice I can offer them behind the scenes. Through the mistakes I've made, I try to help them avoid making the same ones, and this is something that excites me a lot."

Do you see yourself winning the tournament?

"In the last two years, I've become a better version of myself. Every time I come to the Australian Open, I feel like I'm better than the previous year, I've learned a lot, play with great confidence, do the right things. Look, anything can happen, in the end, this is tennis. If it were solely based on rankings, it would be a very dull sport. At this stage, anything can happen, we've seen how opportunities arise. It's a long tournament, we all start in the first round, for me, it's about maintaining that tunnel vision, focusing on your next opponent and doing the best you can. In every tournament you play, there's always an opportunity."
