Jannik Sinner calms down with his wrist problems

The world number 1 made it to the US Open final after defeating Draper, but did so with a scare that resulted in a bad fall on his left wrist. The Italian addressed the incident with the media.

Jannik Sinner has fulfilled his mission and is already in the final of the US Open, his second Grand Slam final after winning the Australian Open earlier this year. And it's because the Italian has been performing as number 1 since landing in New York, now defeating Jack Draper in a semifinal that ended up being very physical for both. With stomach issues for the British player and a wrist twist for the Italian, the match was far from calm. In a press conference, Sinner talked about his discomfort or his great weakness, among other things.

 - How does your wrist feel?

"The physio helped me relax very quickly on the court, so at the beginning, I felt good. Then, it went away when I started playing, which is a good thing. We'll see how it goes tomorrow when it cools down; it will be a different feeling. I hope it's nothing to worry about. I'm pretty calm because if it were something bad, I would feel it. We'll see how it goes."

- He arrived in New York without expectations

"We've been taking it day by day, without many expectations, trying to find my game and our rhythm. I started the first day by losing the first set. I've been trying to build confidence during these days. We trained hard on the days between matches, trying to prepare each one as best as possible. So, I'm happy to reach the final here; it's a special tournament, and we'll see what Sunday has in store for us."

- About Jack's issues

"We have a good friendship; we know each other quite well. Obviously, it's tough for him. The semis are a bit different to play, and in Grand Slams, the finals are also different. There's a lot of tension, but it's been nice to share the court with him. Hopefully, we'll have more battles in the future; I'm sure that will be the case. He has made some progress this week, playing incredible tennis, serving well, and improving a lot physically. He'll be a tough opponent in the future, for sure, and I'm happy for him. The first two sets were very tough, very physical. I also felt it physically, so I tried to hang in there in the third set to finish the match in three."

- What is your biggest weakness?

"Sometimes at the net, I miss some volleys. I still feel that I can improve a bit in my shot selection. Also, some small details that make a big difference when playing at a high level. My team and I know what I need to improve on. Today, for example, I should have approached the net more. But that takes time; it's not magic; you have to go through certain moments. I've lost matches doing the right things, so you have to keep working on that. I've also won matches doing the wrong things. You have to communicate with the team and try to find the balance. So yes, I can still improve."

- About the atmosphere expected against Fritz or Tiafoe in the final

"The atmosphere will be what it will be. We are in the United States, in New York, playing against an American, so the crowd will be a bit more on his side. But it's normal, it's like when I play in Italy, which is somewhat the same. So, I'll accept it; I have my team and my people close to me. In my mind, I know many people will be watching me from home in Italy, so I just need a bit of their support."
