Naomi Osaka a just experienced one of the biggest shocks of the first week of Wimbledon 2026. The Japanese tennis player played brilliantly to defeat Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 6-2 7-6(2) in 1 hour and 28 minutes, where she was superior almost the entire time. 

Osaka had been showing great form throughout the tournament, seeking revenge for the 3 defeats she had suffered this year against Sabalenka, the latest being at Roland Garros. Aryna, on the other hand, arrived at Wimbledon with the pressure of potentially losing the top rank in the WTA and facing a crisis both in terms of results and mentally, which will worsen after yet another major with a poor outcome. She only has the US Open left to try to salvage a season in which she has been more vulnerable than ever.

The first set was a masterclass by Naomi. Impeccable on serve and aggressive on return, she dominated over a Sabalenka who seemed unable to even step onto the court, paying a high price for it. Osaka managed to break Aryna's serve twice to secure a convincing 6-2 against the Belarusian player, whose flat shots lacked impact and were filled with unforced errors that not only affected her in that set but throughout the match.

The second set was much closer, but it still felt like Osaka had an extra gear compared to her opponent. In fact, it was Sabalenka who had to save the only two break points of the entire second set, while Naomi barely conceded 5 points on serve throughout the set, a statistic that clearly reflected the match. The tiebreak spelled disaster for Sabalenka, as she could only manage to win two points. Nervous, error-prone, and outplayed, Aryna bids farewell to Wimbledon earlier than expected, facing an opponent ready to achieve something great at the All England Club. 

Despite the disappointing result, Sabalenka's upcoming matches in the latter half of the year point to more drama, as she has less than 500 points ahead of Elena Rybakina and will need to defend many points that may jeopardize her leadership in women's tennis. Following Roland Garros, she disclosed that she had to see a psychiatrist, so her reaction after another tough loss that highlights the challenging year she is enduring remains to be seen.
