Elina Svitolina has not been able to escape the media frenzy generated by the official statement she issued about 24 hours ago, surprising the world with news of her breakup with Gael Monfils. The widespread misunderstanding and criticism faced by the Ukrainian have led her to write a new statement attempting to shed light on the matter.

After 8 years of relationship, a wedding, and a daughter together, any breakup is dramatic, but even more so when publicly exposed and the public feels entitled to choose who is the good one and who is the bad one without knowing all the details. Elina Svitolina is aware that, with her initial statement, she has been cast in the role of the villain in this story, assuming that the breakup was her initiative and providing reasons that many found unconvincing.

After it became known that Gael Monfils was so devastated by the news that he decided to withdraw from the two tournaments he had scheduled for the end of the year, in Lyon and Paris, where he was going to pay a true homage by saying goodbye to his fans, social media quickly passed judgment and launched a witch hunt against Svitolina.

This has prompted the Ukrainian to speak out again on her Instagram account, with an official statement that aims to clarify her previous words and present a much more contextualized and sincere view of everything behind this breakup. There has yet to be a reaction from Gael Monfils.

Here is Elina Svitolina's new statement about her breakup with Gael Monfils

I wanted to clarify a bit my previous post because I've realized that not everyone, especially my international followers, completely understood what I wanted to convey.

In that post, I shared only one of the reasons that influenced my decision and led me to reflect on my life and my future. But the truth is that there is much more behind it, and it has never been just one thing.

When you have lived through the reality of a war for more than four and a half years, going through very different situations, emotions of all kinds, and hard moments, it is natural that you start to see life differently. Your perspective changes, your values and priorities evolve, and you start to understand what you really want out of life.

At a certain point, I simply realized that I did not want to continue living a life in which I was not truly happy. And believe me, reaching this decision has not been easy.

I want and respect my husband very much. I will always love him and be grateful for the person he is. Precisely for that reason, it was so important for me to be sincere, both with him and with myself.

It is not always possible to explain in a single post everything that lies behind such personal and difficult decisions. And, honestly, there are things that are too personal to share publicly.

This has been and continues to be my way of dealing with how to announce the end of our marriage. However, as some of you have seen, Gaël's career came to an abrupt end after he decided to stop considering our situation.

Unfortunately, he has received many accusations he did not deserve, so we decided to publish a joint statement.

I hope this helps you understand a bit better what I wanted to say. But please, be kind and understanding. We are going through an incredibly difficult moment for both of us.
