David Ferrer is in the spotlight this week for announcing the end of his term as captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team once the finals of this edition are held in November. Also for the decision he must make regarding the fifth player called up, who could be Alejandro Davidovich, who is seeking his attention in a curious way.

There was a desire to hear David Ferrer’s reflections after announcing his departure from leading the Spanish team and the indirect messages from Alejandro Davidovich after his victories in Shanghai. He appeared on El Partidazo de Cope to discuss all this and was also asked about the recent controversy involving Rafael Jódar regarding his poor response to a ball boy, as well as Carlos Alcaraz's determination to pursue the Salad Bowl this year.

Why Ferrer has decided to end his term as Davis Cup captain

"I wanted to announce that my cycle has ended because I know the most honest thing is to give the Federation time to find a substitute. It wouldn’t change anything if we win the Salad Bowl; I feel that my time has ended, and I need to seek new challenges. Most of the players already knew my decision," stated Ferrer, who did not want to comment on what he will do next year, with rumors already circulating about the possibility of him becoming a coach for an important player like Jódar.

What his team will be for the Finals in Bologna

"I am clear that I will announce the call on October 26. I will call up four players and reserve my selection of a fifth player, which I will decide in the week of the Masters 1000 in Paris. I want to see how everyone arrives," he assured.

Indirect messages from Alejandro Davidovich

"I don’t take it personally. He is finishing the year strong and has chances of being called up. If his messages are directed at me, you’ll have to ask him," David commented before acknowledging that he has recently been in contact with the player. "I messaged him when he won in Chengdu; I also have contact with his coach. Whatever happens, the criteria I use to decide is purely sporting."

Rafael Jódar's controversy with a ball boy in Shanghai

"I'm not worried, but I don't like this. Nowadays, tennis players are very exposed. These things have always happened; I'm not justifying Rafa, but at some point, we all lose our nerves and do things that aren't right. We can't have a categorical opinion about him based on one particular episode. We've all experienced something like this; we learn from these things. Rafa is a very good guy, very polite and respectful. What happened was out of place, but let's not go crazy judging him."

Carlos Alcaraz's ambition to win the Salad Bowl

"I know he is very excited to win the Davis Cup. It’s positive that he has decided to compete several weeks before going to Bologna. He hasn’t played many tournaments this year, so I think it’s a good time to go for the title. We have very good players, a great team, but you never know. Look what happened to us in Malaga when we had Rafa and Carlos, and we lost to the Netherlands," he declared.

Interesting statements from David Ferrer, who is aware of the importance of the fight for the Salad Bowl this year and of all the public debates surrounding his decision regarding the final five members of the team.
