Fortunately for us, Fabio Fognini has never been one to hide his thoughts. Now retired from professional tennis, the Italian still has a unique perspective on analyzing what happens on the circuit. On this occasion, he spoke about the new generations, placing Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on a different level from the rest.

"There are two phenomena, Sinner and Alcaraz, and then there are the others, distanced," Fognini stated in remarks collected by Ubitennis. He wanted to clarify his statement by highlighting what he admires most about each. "From Jannik, I admire his dedication; from Carlitos, the talent." Two different paths leading to the same destination: the highest level of world tennis.

The only player who can get close to Sinner and Alcaraz

However, if there is one player that Fognini sees as having the potential to approach them, it is Lorenzo Musetti. The Italian believes that his compatriot still has enormous room for growth, but he also identifies what may be holding back his evolution. "The player who can get closest to them is Musetti, who can grow a lot," he explained. He added an interesting reflection on the talent of the Carrara player: "He has so much talent that, at times, it plays against him."

Fognini also ventured to distribute other accolades. For him, the best serve on the circuit belongs to Alexander Zverev, while the best forehand is between Alcaraz and Sinner, although he also wanted to include Matteo Berrettini when the Roman is in good form. At the net, however, he prefers Alcaraz and Grigor Dimitrov.

The man from San Remo also recalled his own career and explained how he decided to call it quits after Wimbledon 2025, where he lost to Alcaraz. After that defeat, he took a week to think at home and ultimately understood that it was time to close a chapter. Thank goodness we still have him in the media.
