Swiatek's confession explains why her tennis is working again
There is no doubt that Iga Swiatek is having her best moment of the season, which is why she is just three steps away from completing a double in Canada and Cincinnati. What is the reason for her change?
With Iga Swiatek, it was as evident that things were not right as it is now that things are back on track. This rule doesn't always hold true, but the fact that she is winning matches again is a definitive indicator when we talk about someone as competitive as the Polish player.
With the title from Canada still fresh, Swiatek's tennis has been on track these days at the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, where she has already reached the quarter-finals. This means she is just three very complicated and significant steps away from arriving in New York with a double title that positions her as the top favorite. But let's not rush; it’s worth sitting down to listen to her latest interview with Tennis Channel, where she perfectly explains when her dynamics started to change this season.
Iga Swiatek explains the origin of her change
“I think I’ve been working a lot, trying to change things that sometimes didn’t quite work. Now it’s going much better. I also needed that week after Wimbledon when I didn’t see a tennis court and could relax and live a little of a different life. That gave me time to disconnect and really reset. After Roland Garros, I didn’t do too well, but this time that break after Wimbledon was really good for me.
The turning point of the season
"When I returned to the court, I felt much fresher. I continued with the work I had been doing before, but it was a bit easier, with a more positive attitude, and I feel that all that work is paying off right now. It's nice to realize that if you care and work really hard in sports, at some point, you will get something in return. Sports are quite fair: the more you give, hopefully, the more results you get. You need to have that hope and those goals. I'm happy because now I feel good about my game and also with my mentality on the court. Everything is working quite well.”
Swiatek confesses which time she prefers to play tennis
“I like playing the first match because I have a fixed schedule and I know exactly when to warm up and what my routine is. You just get up, do it, and then you have the whole day to rest. This time I played some night sessions in Toronto, so it was pretty hard to get up, but I feel that now I’m ready for both options. No matter what the schedule of my next match is, I’m prepared to play either at night or during the day.
Overall, I would say I prefer playing during the day. I like to get up early, have that morning routine, and finish as soon as possible. I also think it’s healthier because our bodies are not used to playing at nine at night. But I can adapt to anything. I’ve played all kinds of sessions throughout my career, and I understand why we play so late: it’s entertainment, and when I watch tennis, I usually do so at night. So I completely understand it; you just have to be prepared for both.”
Keys to defeating Parry
“I remember the last game because I wanted to fight and make it physical. I knew she was playing with slice and felt that she was getting better at it each time. But, on the other hand, I knew I couldn’t do much more with those shots, so I felt secure playing to her backhand. In the last two points, I tried to make it physical and changed the rhythm a bit. She also wanted to do something more, so I think I was solid enough to make her feel pressure and have to take a bit more risk, which gave me opportunities. I remember having a very specific plan for that last game. Maybe I didn’t have it exactly in the previous ones; that’s why I don’t remember them as well.”
