On an official level - semi-official, since the title still doesn't count as professional - we only have one stop left to enjoy on the ATP calendar. This is the #NextGen Finals 2025, held in Jeddah from September 17 to 21.

Once again, the top eight under-20 players from around the world will gather there, with the notable absence of Joao Fonseca from the main draw. We will see Jakub Mensik, Learner Tien, Alexander Blockx, Dino Prizmic, Martín Landaluce, Nicolai Budkov Kjaer, Nishesh Basavareddy, and Rafael Jódar. And what will they find there? A very peculiar regulation, and although not all are newcomers to the event, it's worth recalling and highlighting some minor changes for this eighth edition of the #NextGen Finals.

These are the rules of the Next Gen Finals 2025

For example, starting with scoring, let the most unaware know that matches are played best of five sets, even though sets are to four games. When it reaches 3-3, a seven-point tiebreak is played. There are no advantages, so in case of 40-40, a sudden-death point will be played where the server chooses which side to serve to.

Regarding changeovers, it's worth remembering that there is no break after the first game, deemed unnecessary. There will be a break after the first three games, lasting 90 seconds. Another break will occur if it reaches 3-2, plus a final one at the end of each set. During tiebreaks, a break every six points. By the way, the break after each set will be 90 seconds, not the usual 120 seconds.

If we delve a bit further into the rules, it should be noted that the warm-up before each match will last only three minutes. Ball changes will happen every seven games. The serve clock has a maximum of 8 seconds between first and second serves. Without releasing the clock from their hand, players have a maximum of 25 seconds between points, which decreases to 15 seconds if the point lasted less than three strokes.

There will also be freedom of movement in the stands during the first three games to allow some leeway for those who are naturally late, took longer to park, or lost a few minutes getting refreshments. Afterwards, the rule of free will is maintained except for restricted areas behind the baseline, where players might be disturbed.

As for innovation, the tournament has once again invested heavily to make this event a benchmark in Big Data, containing all traditional statistics as well as a detailed analysis available to each player, coach, and fan. In addition to classic data (aces, percentages, breaks), more detailed statistics on performance by exchange type, shot quality, and movement analysis will be included. Interesting parameters to identify who is attacking more or who is winning more points on defense, for example.

We will have to wait a week to see which player adapts best to these regulations and secures their name on a list full of talent since its inception. Hyeon Chung, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Brandon Nakashima, Hamad Medjedovic, and Joao Fonseca have already made history at the #NextGen Finals. We eagerly anticipate meeting the eighth member of the club.
