Venus Williams surprised the world by putting up a fight in her singles match at the 2025 US Open. Although she dreamed of a comeback, Karolina Muchova reacted in time to eliminate the American from this category. Nevertheless, the American tennis player is still standing in the doubles category, where she made a victorious debut alongside Leylah Fernandez.

During a press conference, the Canadian confessed that when she found out, she was like a child on Christmas day. Also pleased with the success of this duo, Venus analyzed for the media present in New York the strengths they possess as a pair, with which they will strive to continue winning.

"I'm used to being the older sister, so I ask her what she wants. It's important that she feels comfortable. In theory, I have more experience, but she has played many more matches, so perhaps that puts us on the same level in terms of how we can compete," Venus confessed about her synergy with Leylah. "We had to wait, because you never know what will happen in a match, and you have to adapt. Once we got going, we hit the accelerator."

Eager to improve

"I always tell people that I'm not good at doubles. No one believes me. Traditionally, doubles players focus and move, and I don't necessarily do all that, but when it comes down to it, I do what I have to do. I'm a singles player, so of course, when I go out to play, I tell myself to just play singles and try that approach, and try not to be something I'm not.

It's an aspect where I don't feel very comfortable on the doubles court, but I think there comes a point in the match where you stop thinking about it and disconnect. I never played with a partner, other than Serena, who had that mindset. Our energy matched in terms of determination, of not giving up. So it was a lot of fun, and I think hopefully we can continue to improve."

The importance of doubles in her career

"It was by no means a side project. We mainly played in Grand Slams for a reason: we wanted to win them. It was important to us. The truth is that I didn't train doubles. I focused on being the best singles player possible in doubles until those movements became more automatic. Hopefully, we'll stay, maybe win another round, and keep improving in doubles."
