Although we are still reliving in some way the great success of Italy from last month in Malaga, the 2025 Davis Cup is already beginning to be planned. After the postponement of this draw, the ITF is already establishing the matchups for that first round of the qualifying phase, where 26 teams will compete in 13 series to determine who advances. It will be the host countries who decide on the dates (either on January 31 and February 1 or on February 1 and 2).

The qualifying round states that each tie will have two individual matches on the first day of the matchup, leaving the doubles for the second day, which will be followed, if necessary, by another two individual matches. Those who win this first qualifying round will secure a place in the second round to be held in September.

Important changes in the format and new venue

After lifting two consecutive titles in Malaga, Italy secures a place in the final phase of the 2025 Davis Cup, which will be held in a city in Italy, likely Bologna. Due to their great performance in the last tournament held in Malaga, the Netherlands receives a Bye in the first round of the qualifying phase, meaning their participation next year will start in September. In this month, another matchup will take place with a team playing at home and another as a visitor, an important change that the ITF will incorporate next season, thus eliminating the group stage.

The matchups of the qualifying round

Novak Djokovic's Serbia will have to battle with Holger Rune's Denmark at the end of next January/early February. Nole's country has already shown in recent years that it is capable of facing this round, although it is true that in this 2024 they have taken a step back. We will still have to wait to know if Djokovic himself will represent his country on those dates. In case of winning against Denmark, their opponent in September will come from the tie between Switzerland and Spain. The Spanish team faces an unprecedented situation compared to recent seasons, where they received a wildcard/bye to play directly either in the group stage or the final stage.
