Holger Rune seems to be beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The Dane, sidelined since late October when he ruptured his Achilles tendon, has not stopped working since his operation, always trying to shorten deadlines and attempting to return during the clay court season. However, rushing back is never a good ally in an injury as serious as his, and his comeback has had to be postponed until Canada or Cincinnati, where it seems his return to the ATP circuit will take place.

His mother and a fundamental pillar of his team, Aneke Rune, already confirmed that in statements to BT: "He is in an intensive training phase, playing points. The sessions are no longer light. He is at full speed and running everywhere. He has taken the final step in his return."

Nevertheless, the expectations for his comeback will need to be realistic. Few players, if any, have returned to 100% after an injury of this severity. The last case was Alexander Zverev, who took over a year to recover his top form after fracturing his ankle at Roland Garros 2022.

Therefore, the key upon his return will be to regain sensations and gradually increase the competitive pace over the months. Currently ranked 81st in the ATP rankings, he will receive direct entry into the US Open. A Grand Slam where he has not historically performed well, with only two victories in five appearances.

Rune's Other Change: From Babolat Pure Aero to Wilson Defyer

The Asian tour and the European indoor season will allow Rune to continue gaining the necessary experience to arrive in 2027, where expectations for the Dane should indeed rise, provided that injuries are kept at bay. However, this new version of Rune that will appear in Canada or Cincinnati will have a significant difference from the previous one: his racket brand.

The Dane decided to switch from Babolat, where he used the Pure Aero model, to Wilson, where he will carry the innovative Wilson Defyer, as reported by journalist Gill Gross. "This racket captivated me instantly when I began testing it with Wilson. They have supported me in my recovery, and I am looking forward to competing with the Defyer when I return to the court," said Rune when his move to Wilson was officially announced.

However, Gross labels this decision as "risky," stating that it was made for commercial reasons: "It's a risky game, so let's hope the situation with Holger has been handled correctly."

Therefore, Holger Rune will return to the ATP circuit under these circumstances. With a new racket, extreme caution, and the necessary patience to gradually regain his best level, the one that allowed him to face any opponent on equal terms.
