The ITIA explains why Vondroušová is sanctioned for four years and leaves the door open for the CAS

The ITIA issues an official statement confirming the 4-year sanction against Vondrousova, detailing the reasons, but allows the Czech player to appeal.

The full resolution of the case of Markéta Vondroušová reveals the arguments that led to the confirmation of a four-year sanction against the 2023 Wimbledon champion. The independent tribunal found it proven that the Czech player intentionally refused to provide a sample in a doping control out of competition on December 3, 2025, and rejected that there was a sufficient justification to do so.

The document, published after the decision was communicated to the parties, reconstructs everything that happened and explains why the anxiety and stress issues alleged by Vondroušová do not allow for a reduction of the penalty. However, the procedure may still have a final chapter: the tennis player has the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

What happened on December 3, 2025?

Everything goes back to that night. A doping control agent visited Vondroušová's home to conduct a control out of competition. The main problem was that the visit occurred outside the 60-minute window that the Czech player had declared in her location information.

Vondroušová questioned whether she had to undergo the control at that moment. The tribunal found it proven that she understood that the woman was there to conduct a doping test and that her main objection was not really about her identity, but her belief that she could not be tested outside that time window. The Czech player, who had received at least 83 notifications of controls previously, eventually signed the form after being warned of the possible consequences and left without providing a sample.

There is one particularly relevant element: that same night she posted a photograph of the agent on Instagram and publicly explained that she refused because she believed her declared schedule should be respected. Additionally, her WhatsApp messages with her boyfriend and her agent were used as evidence. Shortly after, she learned that she could indeed be subjected to tests outside that time. On December 5, she contacted another doping agent she knew to try to conduct a test, and on December 7, she provided a sample, which turned out to be negative.

Why does the ITIA consider four years deserved?

The defense argued that Vondroušová suffered from generalized anxiety disorder and had an acute stress reaction that night, while also questioning aspects of the agent's identification. The tribunal accepts that the player suffered anxiety and stress, but does not find it proven that they were of such magnitude that they prevented her from rationally submitting to the control.

This nuance practically determines the entire sanction. The tribunal concludes that the agent was authorized, that Vondroušová knew she had to provide a sample, and that she consciously decided not to do so. It also does not consider that there were exceptional circumstances that would allow for a reduction in the punishment.

The ITIA also defended that an intentional refusal must receive a strong sanction: punishing her substantially less than a positive could create the perverse incentive for an athlete to refuse to provide a sample rather than risk being detected for a prohibited substance. Therefore, the established period is four years.

An investigation of more than six months

The ITIA immediately opened an investigation. The agent was interviewed on December 8, 2025, and Vondroušová on the 10th. Subsequently, new reports and statements from her agent and the involved parties were gathered. An independent committee ultimately determined that there was a case that needed to be formally investigated.

On January 15, 2026, Vondroušová received the preliminary notification of a possible doping violation. On February 20, she submitted her response, citing mental health issues, fear for her safety, and deficiencies in the agent's actions. The ITIA officially formulated the charges on February 27, and the Czech player requested on March 2 that the matter be decided by an independent tribunal.

After the exchange of documentation and evidence, the hearing took place in London on June 11. The tribunal communicated its decision to the parties on June 22 and established that date as the start of the suspension. The motivated resolution is dated July 21, 2026.

The CAS, Vondroušová's last hope

The sanction extends for four years from June 22, 2026, although the results achieved between the incident and that date are maintained. It is significant that the samples taken from Vondroušová on December 7, 2025, and May 3, 2026, were negative. Therefore, the sanction does not stem from a prohibited substance being found but rather from her refusal to undergo the control.

The battle, in any case, may not be over. Vondroušová has 21 days from receiving the resolution to appeal to the CAS. It is a crucial avenue considering that four years off the court could seriously jeopardize the continuation of her career. If she does not appeal, or if the CAS ultimately confirms the decision in its entirety, the resolution will be final and binding.
