Novak Djokovic already made clear upon his arrival in Beijing that he was not there for tourism but to win the tournament. However, given his level in his first two matches, not everyone was convinced. He struggled physically against Nuno Borges (6-3, 7-6(2)) and in the round of 16 against Bu Yunchaokete, he had a tough time coming back (4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2). But it was in the match against Zverev that he showed the best version of the year to secure his spot in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev comes in at one of the best moments of the season. The recent champion at the ATP Hangzhou, he has not lost a single set in the Beijing tournament yet. He had no trouble debuting against Pablo Carreño (6-4, 6-2) and dispatched Jen-Lennard Struff (6-4, 6-3) in the round of 16 and Fran Cerúndolo (7-6(4), 6-3) in the quarterfinals.
This semifinal match at the ATP Beijing will be the 16th encounter between Djokovic and Medvedev. The Serbian leads their head-to-head record with 10 victories to 5. In fact, their last match was in the final of the US Open 2023, where the Belgrade player lifted his 24th Grand Slam, while the last for the Moscow player was in the semifinals of the ATP 500 Dubai 2023.
