Germany came very close to achieving a global comeback in that doubles match, but ultimately Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez Portero managed to restore order to secure Spain's qualification for the grand final of the Davis Cup 2025.

Despite being in the fight until the end, Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz were unable to turn the series around, confirming Germany's defeat under the leadership of Alexander Zverev, who did not disappoint in the singles match.

"We are very disappointed with the result, with the outcome of this tie. The first match started like the first day. Jan-Lennard came out strong, with a break ahead. Then he played a bad point and lost the first set. At least that's how I saw it from the bench. At 4-15-0, he lost a very long exchange. In the second set, he fought wonderfully. He stayed in the match with good serves. He should have won the tiebreak; in the end, he got a bit tense. He didn't get any first serves at 6-3. It was a tough defeat," said Michael Kohlman, the captain of Germany.

In the doubles, being down 0-4, I think the energy level and playing style changed a bit. We didn't capitalize on our opportunities on two occasions. Also, the break points in the first set gave us some confidence for the start of the second set. We are going home with another semifinal. Everyone expected more this year. We feel very good, but in the end, this format, with two singles and one doubles match, is so close that it unites the countries a lot. There is no margin for error. There is no room for not having top quality at certain stages. You have to take risks in every match. Today we didn't, and that's why we have to go back home, and Spain is in the final."

Germany and the Davis Cup Format

"In a way, it's a bit different. On the one hand, we are professional tennis players. We don't care about the weeks. On the other hand, it's not very different either, just because it's a week in our calendar, a week when we're not at home. In the end, whether we play three matches or one doesn't change much for us. It's a matter of preference. Everyone has an opinion: they prefer home and away matches or the group stage, as we had before," explained Tim Puetz.

"We, as the German team, as Sascha has said several times, that's also our opinion. We prefer home and away matches because it's a bit like the traditional Davis Cup. It's a week in our calendar. Maybe we prefer the home and away format. In the long run, how they do it, how they maintain it, is way above our level. We will go wherever they send us."
