The Shanghai ATP has left us today with some very unpleasant images after the match between Frances Tiafoe and Roman Safiullin. When the American approached the net to shake hands with his opponent, he turned to the chair umpire and said, "Fuck you, fuck you, man. Seriously, fuck you, fucking idiot. You screwed up the match, do your fucking job. Three fucking hours, I'm fighting and running for my life". The reason? Tiafoe was very upset with the referee's decisions as they had a negative impact, especially in the tie-break of the third set. The American received a warning at 5-5 in the tiebreak for time violation, and the umpire took away his first serve. Tiafoe lost that point and subsequently lost the match. The controversial part is that Frances received that warning when the ball was already in the air, in the middle of the serve. Already during the match, the referee had warned him for time violations at crucial moments when such warnings can be decisive. We will see how the ATP responds to this incident.
